Growing in the small town of Hagerman, New Mexico, Robert Martinez, CFNP, knew the importance of “taking care of our own”. His father, along with the fathers of many of his friends, was a member of an elite fraternity who ran the Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Services. It was a natural progression of life that one would follow in the footsteps of elders by volunteering with the local emergency services. Robert was trained as an EMT while still in high school. Robert received his Associates Degree in nursing before he began paramedic training. He worked in Emergency Centers (EC) and ICU’s as a nurse.
Robert moved to Lubbock to attend TTUHSC’s newly established nursing program earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1984. In 1992, he received his Master of Science in nursing from TTUHSC School of Nursing. Robert continues to serve on the faculty of the TTUHSC School of Nursing.
In February of 1993, Robert went to work at Freedom Clinic, the second clinic opened by UMC Health System. While Freedom’s location has changed three times, Robert has remained the constant, developing a very loyal patient following and caring for several generations of family members.
Mr. Martinez’s personal philosophy on the rewards as a primary care provider is that “I use my skills and abilities to assist people in their healthcare needs. I emphasize body, mind, spirit and family in my approach for the delivery of nursing and medical care.”
He and his wife, Vangie, have four children and one grandchild. When he is not providing care to his many patients at Freedom Clinic, he enjoys hunting, fishing, woodworking and being with his family.
